Structural Integration

Joshua and Leg copy

w/ Joshua Lyons

Sunday, February 21st
8am – 3pm

Joshua Lyons will be available for sessions at AYCT on Sunday, February 21st! He is David Robson’s Structural Integration therapist that he has been going to for 10 years, and David can’t recommned him enough.

Structural Integration is a method of body therapy which is oriented towards working with the fascial system (connective tissue) of the body. Our fascia surrounds our muscles and organs – it gives muscles their shape and the body its structure.

The continuing pull of gravity, the stress of daily life and physical injuries can pull the body out of alignment. The fascia gradually shortens, tightens and adjusts to accommodate the misalignment. Structural Integration aligns and balances the body by lengthening and repositioning fascia. As fascia is lengthened it allows the muscles to move more efficiently, organs to have more space, and the general level of functioning of the body improves.

This method is ideal for anyone suffering from aches and pains which don’t seem to go away, for people who have an old injury that hasn’t fully healed, and for all those who feel that their posture could be better or that their body could be more comfortable from day to day.

Joshua Lyons has successfully used Structural Integration to bring relief to many conditions, including neck and shoulder pain, sciatica and piriformis syndrome, lower back pain, migraines and chronic headaches, frozen shoulder, tendonitis, plantar fasciitis, bursitis.

Session times:

  • 8am – 9am
  • 9:10am – 10:10am
  • 10:20am – 11:20am
  • 11:30am – 12:30pm
  • 12:40pm – 1:40pm
  • 1:50pm – 2:50pm

Cost: $100 per 60min session

Joshua Lyons has been treating chronic pain and injury conditions since 2003. He is a practitioner of Ida Rolf’s Method of Structural Integration – an effective manual therapy approach for relaxing and realigning the body.
Joshua graduated with a Masters of Social Work degree from the University of Toronto, is a keen student of yoga, and is passionate about his work to help people be pain free and injury free.

Lecture and Q&A: How did Guruji Create the Ashtanga Yoga System?

Saturday, April 30th

Screen Shot 2016-02-04 at 2.54.58 AM

The story of where Ashtanga Yoga came from and how it developed has been subject to much debate and speculation. Due to language barriers and misunderstandings, certain mythologies about lost texts, like the Yoga Korunta, have given an air of mystery to this particular yoga tradition. However, the development of this practice is really quite straightforward, and in this lecture, we Eddie will share his conversations with Sharath and Guruji, that were conducted in Kannada, about how this system, as we know it today, came to be. The basis of its development is revelatory and encouraging, and will shine a new light on the genius of Sri K. Pattabhi Jois.
At the end of the lecture, there will be time for Q&A and discussion. Students are invited to submit their questions in advance, by emailing info@ashtangatoronto.com with the subject: “Eddie Stern Day 1 Lecture Questions.”

Lecture and Q&A: How Breathing Balances Physiological and Emotional Health in Practice

Sunday, May 1st

Screen Shot 2016-02-04 at 3.10.15 AM

Breath is the single most important part of a spiritual practice. Krishnamacharya was well known for having said, “If you can breath, you can practice yoga”. In this talk, Eddie will discuss the basic components of the nervous system, and how our breath is inextricable from many of our physiological functions and the function of our sense organs. Guruji used to say without control of the sense organs, the deeper levels of yoga were not possible. In order to control the sense organs, we first need our nervous system to be in cooperation with our mind. In this lecture, you’ll learn some basic pointers about how to make that cooperation possible. We will discuss pertinent verses from the Yoga Sutras as well as basic neuroscience.
At the end of the lecture, there will be time for Q&A and discussion. Students are invited to submit their questions in advance, by emailing info@ashtangatoronto.com with the subject: “Eddie Stern Day 2 Lecture Questions.”

Assisting School

Shara drops backJul 9 – 24, 2016

This is a course for those interested in the Ashtanga Yoga system, and who want to learn more about the tradition of Ashtanga and the Mysore-style of practice. This is NOT a teacher training course. This course will NOT provide any credentials or certificates that state you are a teacher. If you want to be Authorized to teach Ashtanga Yoga, you need to go and study with Sharath Jois at KPJAYI in Mysore, India.

The goal of this program is to communicate a thorough knowledge of the Ashtanga Yoga technique, a keen eye for anatomy, and safe assisting practices. The focus of this course will be hands-on adjusting techniques and working in the mysore room. The course will also offer training in functional anatomy with Arielle Nash, and a section on learning how to actively listen to and help students with Sandra Pribanic.

The pre-requisite for this course is AYCT’s Ashtanga Primary Series Intensive.

Enrolment in Assisting School includes an Unlimited Membership to practice at AYCT for the duration of the course.

Course Structure:

Adjustment Techniques –

This section is the focus of Assisting School: gaining the tools to assist and adjust students. These workshops will cover different techniques and options for assisting. David will also focus on how to assist and support students with back, knee, shoulder and hip injuries and spotting issues that might lead to discomfort or pain.

Practicum; Assisting in the Mysore room –

Under the guidance of David Robson, you will have the opportunity to use what you have learned in Assisting School in the Mysore room. Learning from David in the busy AYCT studio is excellent training in helping a variety of levels of practitioner, establishing trust, and problem solving adjustments.

 Anatomy –

Proper knowledge of movement mechanics and integrated anatomy will help you to give safe and effective individual adjustments with confidence. This portion of the course goes beyond basic muscle and bone anatomy, covering all the body’s systems and introduces the fascial lines. This segment provides a holistic understanding of how the body functions and responds to specific adjustments. This portion of the course will be taught by Arielle Nash.

Additional Skills in Listening and Helping –

A unique part of Mysore style practice is the dialogue that opens up between teacher and student. Psychotherapist and Ashtangi Sandra Pribanic will lead series of classes on creating a safe space for practitioners and using listening techniques to create awareness of student’s needs.

About Sandra Pribanic

Knowledge is only rumor until it lives in your bones. (Asaro tribe)

Sandra found Ashtanga “by coincidence” in 2011, and has been inspired by daily practice since.

Her work is about exploring places where mind–body–heart–spirit can experience connectedness (however briefly!), about recognizing what moves and makes one alive, about creating space for what is loud inside (intense/difficult emotions) to quiet down, and what is quiet to get heard. Above all, about making space for all there is.

Sandra is a Registered Psychotherapist, with a private practice in Toronto. Her practice and teaching integrate body-centered, psychodynamic and transpersonal psychotherapy, craniosacral and energy work.
